Dan Hilliard earns Heart of Gold |
Dan Hilliard -Potential life-saving action earns ‘Heart of Gold'
Staff Report

John Gaston has nominated Dan Hilliard for the Heart of Gold Award. He writes:
“On
Saturday, June 6th, I attended an end-of-season pool party with my
youngest daughter's under-10 soccer team. The party was held at the
Achasta pool, with a half dozen adults and over a dozen children in
attendance. The kids had been swimming for a while when the pizza man
arrived and the pool emptied quickly. Dan and I were seated on lounge
chairs on the far end of the pool from where everyone was gathering for
the food as he and I were engaged in a conversation about our
children's sports activities. Suddenly Dan stopped and said ‘Is she
drowning?' Hardly before I even had time to look up and realize what
was happening, Dan had sprung from his seat, dove into the pool fully
clothed and was swimming toward a small child who was flailing
underneath the water.
“Although he said it seemed as though it
took forever to reach her, Dan was there in just seconds, averting a
near tragedy. With everyone's attention on the pizza and the boisterous
activity of the soccer team, no one had noticed that the little two
year-old had slipped away, wishing to play with the colorful dive
sticks that she had carried with her and was still clutching tightly as
she struggled under the water. There was no life guard on duty at the
time, but Dan, being a father of five, and having three of his own
children at the party, was keenly aware of what was going on around
while others were distracted. His love of people and especially
children
is very evident to anyone who knows him. He is an asset to the
community and is solely responsible for saving the little girl from a
tragic circumstance. He certainly deserves recognition for his ‘heart
of gold'.”
The Heart of Gold award recognizes individuals who go
“above and beyond' to be of service and help to their friends,
neighbors and associates.
